Electrical safety
Sometimes, it’s easy to think that we know everything there is about electrical safety.
But, did you know that over the past 14 years, 31 people in Australia have electrocuted themselves watering their Christmas trees with the lights plugged in?
It’s better to be safe than sorry. Take a look at these safety tips for when you’re working around water and electricity.
Things to remember
- All electrical work must be carried out by a licensed electrician. Always ask for a certificate to verify.
- We recommend that safety switches be installed in your property.
Electricity and water
Water conducts electricity, so take extra care when you’re handling electrical appliances near water or in damp areas.
- If you have a faulty piece of electrical equipment, call a registered electrician or repair technician to fix it. Trying to fix it yourself is potentially very dangerous.
- Don’t overload power points: too many machines connected to the same power point are potentially dangerous.
- Are your power leads in good shape? If you see broken or cracked insulation on the power lead for an appliance, don’t use it—arrange to have it fixed.
- With light fittings, make sure the bulbs don’t exceed the recommended wattage for the fitting or the shade.
- Don’t use portable electrical appliances around water.
- Never touch appliances, switches, power points or lights with wet hands or a damp washcloth.
- Never use a portable electric heater in the bathroom.
- Never leave portable electrical appliances like hair dryers and shavers unattended near a basin, sink or bath. It’s unfortunate but many children have died after pulling appliances into the water, even though they were switched off.
- Never use portable electrical appliances or extension cords close to a pool or pond; they could be splashed or fall into the water.
- If an appliance does get wet, switch it off at the power point, unplug it, dry it out and have it checked by a licensed electrical contractor.
- Never wash or immerse appliances in water unless manufacturer's instructions allow it.
