Energy terms you need to know
The energy industry can seem really complicated with its own unique words and terminology. At Momentum we believe in empowering our customers with knowledge. Here are some key terms that will help you feel more energy aware.
- Contract term/Minimum term: The length of your contract
- Connection/Energization: Connection of power for a customer moving into a new property
- FRMP: Financially Responsible Market Participant, or the retailer that is responsible for servicing your account
- GreenPower: A government accredited program aimed at increasing future development of renewable energy
- Transfer: A change of retailer for a current premises
- Hydro: Electricity generated by water
- Meter read/Service read: When your network company comes to your premises to look at or read your electricity meter
- Network/Distributor: The party responsible for transporting electricity. This is not your retailer. If you experience an electricity outage you should call your local distributor.
- Rates: This is the c/kWh amount that the customer pays. It is what you pay for your electricity usage
- Renewable energy: Power made from sources that can be replenished, such as water and wind
- PPD: Prompt Payment Discount is the discount that you recieve if you pay your invoice by the due date (when applicable to your contract)
- Service to Propert Charge (STPC): A fixed charge we pass on to you from your Energy Distributor. It covers the costs of using the electricity distributor to physically deliver the electricity to your premises (i.e. maintain the poles and wires). Also known as a 'flat monthly fee’ or ‘network charge’.
- Site address/ supply address: The premises where the energy is being supplied
- Smart Meter: A type of meter that records energy usage remotely (off-site)
- Solar/PV: Electricity generated by the sun
- Tariff: The distribution pricing structure that the customer is on, e.g. A200, NE23
