GreenPower

Give renewables an (extra) boost with GreenPower

If you’re getting your power from Momentum, you’re also supporting our parent company Hydro Tasmania – which is good news when it comes to backing Aussie renewables.

But that doesn’t mean you can’t get even greener with your power spend.

What is GreenPower?

GreenPower is Australia’s only government accredited program that allows you to support renewable electricity generation. Contributing is straightforward: once you’ve signed up to a GreenPower plan, your GreenPower charge is added directly onto your power bill.

When you add GreenPower to your plan, the amount of electricity you use each year is matched with renewable energy generated from accredited Australian projects. All GreenPower sales are independently audited, giving you confidence that your electricity use is matched with accredited electricity.

In short: GreenPower takes out the hard work and the guesswork, when it comes to backing Aussie renewables.

How does GreenPower work?

When an eligible renewable energy generator makes a certain amount of energy, they get Large-scale Generation Certificates (LGCs). They’re like the ‘rights’ to that amount of energy. Power companies can buy these certificates and surrender them to the Clean Energy Regulator, which is effectively like saying ‘we bought that renewable energy, and used it.’ Surrendering a certificate means it can’t be used again.

Power companies buy as many LGCs as it takes to cover the amount of GreenPower their customers buy. This incentivises renewable energy generation by creating a demand for those certificates.

Dial it up or down

Because everyone’s budget is different, you choose the percentage you want to match – such as 30%, 50%, 75% or 100%.

Whatever percentage you choose, that’s how much of your electricity use you’re matching with GreenPower accredited renewable electricity. Your GreenPower contribution will be a separate line on your bill.

How much does GreenPower cost?

The GreenPower rate is set by your energy retailer (and shown as part of the signup process). Then, the amount you’ll spend on GreenPower depends on a few things:

  • How much energy you use
  • The GreenPower rate
  • The GreenPower percentage you choose

Here’s an example

Say you use 333 kWh of energy in a month (that’s a typical monthly residential customer usage according to the ESC’s benchmark). Your GreenPower rate is 3.52¢, this is what you’d pay each month (in addition to your normal spend):

GreenPower percentageContribution
30%$3.52
50%$5.86
75%$8.79
100%$11.72

You could match your consumption with GreenPower on your bill for around the same cost as your Netflix subscription. And unlike 'just one more episode’ at 1am, there’s zero guilt and all the good feels.

Why should I choose GreenPower?

If you want to support more renewable energy in Australia, GreenPower is a good way to do it. That’s because any money that you put towards GreenPower goes towards (and encourages more) renewable energy generation in Australia.

For businesses, GreenPower also improves your building’s National Australian Built Environment Rating System (NABERS) which is a performance-based rating system that measures the environmental sustainability of commercial buildings and tenancies in Australia. It also improves Green Star Performance ratings (existing buildings only). GreenPower can also be used as part of gaining RE100, Windmade and GreenBizChec certifications, as well as some Good Environmental Choice Australia certifications.
