If you are in SA and looking for our Solar Sharer Offer, please call 1800 627 228.

You may have heard that smart meter customers in New South Wales, Queensland and South Australia can access three hours of free electricity in the middle of the day. It’s called the Solar Sharer Offer. It’s thanks to Aussies taking up rooftop solar – but it has meant we now have too much of a good thing.

When does it start?

The Solar Sharer Offer went live from 1 July 2026 for residential customers in New South Wales, Queensland and South Australia.

Eligibility

If you’re a residential customer in New South Wales, Queensland or South Australia, and you’ve got a smart meter, you tick all the boxes.

Please note that Momentum currently doesn’t sell to residential customers in the Ergon distribution zone in Queensland.

Is it right for me?

While free power sounds like a win, it may not be the right offer for every household. Before you rush to sign-up, it’s important to consider if you can realistically shift your usage to the midday window. If you move onto the Solar Sharer Offer and still run all your appliances outside the free-power-hours, it’s possible you’ll be paying a higher per kWh rate than your current tariff. There’ll also be a cap of 24kWh per day that you can use during the window.

Most households' average usage should be under this amount (the average 5+ person household uses this amount per day). But if your usage is higher than the cap, you’ll start being charged for it.

Daily supply and controlled load charges (if applicable) still apply during the free usage period.

FAQs

How I can get it? openclose

You can sign-up to the Solar Sharer Offer through your retailer. Current Momentum customers can switch onto the Solar Sharer Offer plan via My Account. New customers can choose the Solar Sharer Offer plan at sign up either online or by calling us on 1800 794 824.

What happens if I go over the cap? openclose

The free 3-hour window has a reasonable usage cap of 24kWh per day. If you go over the cap, you’ll be charged for any additional electricity use within the window.

What will I pay outside the free window? openclose

Electricity rates outside the free period will vary depending on your distributor and the time of day you’re using power. And like most electricity plans, you’ll still have your daily supply charge.

Rates outside the free window may be higher than what you’re paying on your current plan, so it is important to consider this before signing-up to the Solar Sharer Offer.

Will I save money on the Solar Sharer Offer? openclose

You are more likely to save money on this plan if you use a lot of power in the free window, or if you can shift some of your usual usage to the free window. If you don’t, and use most of your electricity in peak times, you may end up paying more than your current plan. If you use a lot of power in peak times, you may wish to compare this offer with other electricity plans that have a lower peak usage price.

Do I need to change my electricity usage habits? openclose

Yes, to get the most out of the Solar Sharer Offer and save, you’ll need to shift some of your usage to the free usage period. If you don’t use much (or any) power during the 3-hour window and continue to use a lot of power in peak times, you could end up paying more than your current or other plans.

Am I eligible for the Solar Sharer Offer if I rent? openclose

Yes - the Solar Sharer Offer is available whether you rent or own your home or apartment. The main exception is if your property is part of an embedded network. Some apartment buildings or townhouses are, so it’s worth double checking if you’re unsure.

I don’t currently have a smart meter, can I request one so I can sign-up to the Solar Sharer Offer? openclose

Yep, you can request a smart meter installation by giving us a call on 1300 350 941 or flicking an email to RP@momentum.com.au. We’ll chat you through the next steps.

Do I need to have solar to take up the Solar Sharer Offer? openclose

Nope. The Solar Sharer Offer is designed to help more customers benefit from excess solar being generated – whether you’ve got panels or not.

I already have solar, can I still sign-up to the Solar Sharer Offer? openclose

Solar customers can sign-up to the Solar Sharer Offer, however it may not be as beneficial. That’s because you’re already generating your own (basically free) electricity during the day. If you don’t have an EV or a battery to store your solar for peak times, you might be better off on your current plan. Solar Sharer Offer customers won’t receive a feed-in tariff, so it’s worth weighing up which option suits you best.
