You might have seen it on your electricity bill, in the news, or opened an email from your power company about it - but what does it really mean? When we say tariff, we’re talking about the way we calculate your electricity rate. But like most things in life, it’s not quite that simple...

What is an electricity tariff and how does it work?

An electricity tariff is a fancy way of saying ‘the rate you pay for power’. Depending on what tariff you’re on, the rate you’re charged might be influenced by a few things – like the plan you’re on, the type of meter you have, where you live, the time you use electricity, or the amount you use.

While your meter records how much electricity you use (and sometimes the time you use it), the tariff determines the rate, so we can calculate what your bill will be.

What are the different types of tariffs?

What makes up your electricity bill?

Your tariff will affect the types of charges you see on your electricity bill. Here are some of the most common ones to get your head around:

Usage: Charges based on the electricity used during your billing period.
Supply: A fixed daily fee for having electricity connected to your property.
Demand: The highest amount of power you use during a specific time period or a fixed amount (you’ll only see this if you have a demand tariff).
Metering: Any costs associated with your electricity meter – such as maintenance or meter reading.

You might also see extra charges like Greenpower, solar Feed-in Tariff (FiT), or any discounts or credits if they’re part of your plan.
