Hydro-Backed Environmental Certificates

Launched in April, Momentum Energy’s new product offering will allow Commercial and Industrial (C&I) customers to match up to 100% of their annual electricity consumption with environmental certificates.

By purchasing HBECs, C&I customers will go beyond the minimum requirement associated with Momentum’s Large-Scale Renewable Energy Target (LRET), which is factored into their energy contract. HBECs are a simple way to show you’re committed to doing the right thing by the environment and showcase how Momentum can support customers with their sustainability commitments.

What’s so good about Momentum’s HBECs?

Set and forget

If you have a commercial and industrial retail energy contract with Momentum, they can match up to 100% of your usage with renewable energy by surrendering Large-Scale Generation Certificates (LGCs) or International Renewable Energy Certificates (I-RECs) on your behalf (read more about these below).

Pick n' mix

Whether you’re looking for LGCs or I-RECs or a cost-effective blend of the two, Momentum can help you find your perfect match.

Easy reporting

Momentum’s annual customer certificate surrender reports can help streamline your environmental reporting.

How it works

Each certificate is considered equal to 1 megawatt-hour (MWh) of energy generated from renewable sources. Momentum offers customers two different types of certificates that can be generated from hydroelectricity* as follows:

  1. Large-Scale Generation Certificates (LGCs) – these are tradable certificates issued by Australia’s Clean Energy Regulator. They’re used to demonstrate that electricity comes from renewable energy sources and are a formally recognised way to offset Scope 2 emissions in Australia. LGCs are created when a power station generates renewable energy above its renewable power baseline, based on 1997 levels of generation for that power station.
  2. International Renewable Energy Certificates (I-RECs) – these are created in accordance with the International Attribute Tracking Standard. I-RECs are sourced from clean energy sources which aren’t eligible to create LGCs because the generation was below the 1997 baseline level.

*The LGCs and I-RECs offered as part of Momentum’s HBECs product will come primarily from Hydro Tasmania’s power stations, but in the rare events where these Hydro assets can’t generate enough certificates to meet customer demand, the shortfall number of certificates will be sourced from other renewable assets across Australia.

HBECs are not backed by GreenPower, as the hydro power stations generating the LGCs and IRECs were built prior to 1997 and are therefore not accredited by the GreenPower program.

Both new and existing Momentum C&I customers are eligible to sign up to the product.
