A step-by-step guide to moving

* 1. Check connection timeframes openclose

For electricity:
If you sign up before 12pm (on a business day), we can connect you that very same day – and you’ll have the kettle boiling before you know it. If you sign up after midday or on a weekend or public holiday, we’ll get the lights on at your new place by the next business day.

For gas:
Gas is very rarely disconnected, so you should be connected on the day you move in. We organise a meter read for the date you give us when you sign up. If your gas is disconnected, we’ll organise a reconnection with your distributor which can take up to 48 hours.

These timeframes may be delayed if there are any issues with the information you have provided or we need to contact you for further information.

2. Pick a plan and sign up openclose

Find the plan you want for your new place and follow the sign-up prompts. See our plans.

3. We organise the connection openclose

We tell your distributor when you want to be connected.

Distributors take care of the poles, wires and pipes that get gas and electricity to you. They may charge a connection fee, which depends on your meter type and how quickly you need to be connected. Our fees and charges page has more info.

4. Disconnect your old place openclose

If you no longer need the service at your old place, let the power company know. If you don’t, they’ll think you’re still there (and keep sending you bills).

5. Make sure your meter’s ready openclose

For electricity, make sure the main switch is in the ‘off’ position by 7am on your connection day. You’ll also need to make sure there’s clear, safe access to the meter.

Your main switch is in your fuse box, or meter box. In houses, that’s usually on an outside wall or garage. In apartments you may find it in a cupboard or hallway. If you don’t have access to the property yet, check this with the owner or real estate agent.

Once we’ve confirmed your connection, you can turn your main switch back on.

In most cases, gas remains connected, so all the distributor needs is access to the meter to take a read.

6. Wait for confirmation openclose

Once we get the thumbs up from your distributor, we’ll get in touch to let you know your electricity is connected. If your main switch was in the ‘off’ position, now’s the time to flick it back on.

If your gas wasn’t already connected, we’ll let you know when it is.

Different companies look after each service, so gas and electricity connections can happen at different times.

A step-by-step guide to moving

* 1. Check connection timeframes openclose

For electricity:
If you let us know you're on the move before 12pm (on a business day) we can connect you that very same day. If you request your move after 12pm or on a weekend or public holiday, we’ll get the lights on at your new place by the next business day.

Just head into MyAccount and let us know you’re moving. It’s easier than boiling the kettle at your new place on moving day (which you’ll be able to do with our same day move).

2. Move with your plan or choose a new one openclose

In MyAccount, click ‘Organise your move’ and follow the prompts to give us your new address and the date you want to be connected. You can choose to keep your current plan or pick a new one.

This will only organise a connection at your new address. Make sure you organise a move out to disconnect the power from your old address, or we’ll think you still live there and keep sending you bills. There’ll be an option to do this after you’ve sorted the move in, but you can also do it by clicking ‘Organise your move’ from your MyAccount dashboard, then clicking ‘Organise my move out only’.

Log into MyAccount.

If MyAccount online isn’t your thing, get in contact with us and we’ll be able to help.

3. We organise the connection openclose

We tell your distributor when you want to be connected at the new place, and when to disconnect your old one.

Can I have power connected on the weekend? openclose

Depending on your distributor, Saturday electricity connections are possible, but we can't guarantee them. So, if you need power by the weekend, we recommend organising your connection for the Friday before. To sign up, head to our plans page (or head to MyAccount if you’re already a Momentum customer). To check if a Saturday electricity connection is possible where you are, give us a call on the number at the bottom of the page.

Gas is very rarely disconnected, so you should be connected on the day you need.

Is there anything I need to do after signing up? openclose

That depends on if you’re moving house or just switching to us in your current place If you're staying in the same property, just sit back and we'll handle the changeover. If you’re moving, there are a few things you can do to make sure your connection goes smoothly:

  • Turn the power off at the main switch of your electricity meter by 7am on the day you’ve requested your connection. The main switch is in your meter box, which can be in a number of places: on an outside wall, in a hallway or cupboard. You can check with your real estate agent if you’re unsure.
  • Make sure there's safe access to the meter and no exposed wiring.

So long as we're able, we'll connect you on the day you requested when you signed up. Once we’ve let you know you’re connected, you’ll need to flick the main switch back on to start using electricity.

Don’t forget to let your old supplier know the date you'd like them to disconnect your old place, too.

How much does it cost to connect and disconnect my house or business? openclose

That depends on your meter type, and where you live.

Your distributor sets the fees for meter reads. Smart meters can be read remotely so the fee is generally lower, where basic meters need to be read manually which usually costs more. Who your distributor is depends on where you live – you can find out who your distributor is here.

Once you know who your distributor is, you can see disconnection/reconnection costs on our fees and charges page.
